Chenille Chic

Take a close look: this cushion in slightly washed-out, casual, crinkle-look – could that be chenille? Bingo! The popular cuddly yarn inspires designers all around the world to ever new, alluring variations. Whether velvety-elegant, crushed, quilted or loose-knit, chenille lends itself to practically any idea. In the 18th century, it was even used as knitting yarn!

The name, by the way, comes from the French word for “caterpillar”, which can be traced to a certain similarity with the hairy animal. That, in turn, comes from the manufacturing process: first a pre-form is woven; that then is cut along the warp. Then the warp threads are twisted around each other, thereby enclosing the weft threads. Their cut ends spring out of the core like caterpillar hairs and thus produce the typical chenille pile.
